" Every child is an artist, the problem is remaining an artist as he grows up." - Pablo Picasso
This year in Art....
This year students in grades k-4 will be exploring art in the contexts of history, culture, technique, material, and experimentation. Techniques introduced will include drawing, painting, collage, printmaking, and ceramics (Hill School), to an age appropriate level. Students will have access to materials that include colored pencils, crayons, tempera/acrylic paints, watercolors, watercolor pencils, markers, oil pastels, chalk, clay, and more as the year progresses.
Students will be encouraged to make meaningful choices about the materials and content they wish to use for their own artwork. Sketch booklets will be used for students to design and plan. These booklets will also serve as a means for communication between student and teacher. All student artwork will be stored in individual portfolios that will remain at school until winter vacation and the end of the school year. Twice during the year students will be asked to perform a "portfolio review". This will be an opportunity for each child to reflect on the work they have made and their own individual progress, and an opportunity to analyze and respond to the work of their classmates as well.
Art curriculum will be aligned to the National Core Arts Standards. These standards prove to be naturally incorporated into purposeful teaching by focusing on four overarching objectives: students will Create, Present, Respond, and Connect. _
